Laughing Buddha in Buddhism?
Hello, I'm in the process of becoming a Buddhist. I've read that the Shakyamuni Buddha is the main Buddha to be placed within the home shrine, But a Buddhist I visited had the laughing Buddha or Budai as he's called as the only Buddha in his shrine. I'm terribly confused, can you worsip any Buddha in your home shrine?
Your home altar can be simple or complex, as you like. Your altar can have a statue of a Buddha, or a bodhisattva, or Budai (who was recognized as the future Buddha, Maitreya), a stone, a flower, or nothing at all.
The reason many practitioners place a small statue on their altar is to remind them of their vow to attain enlightenment. However, anything can serve this purpose -- even a photograph of a beautiful scene.

My altar has a dried lotus pod, an old wooden statue of Manjusri that I got in Korea, an incense burner, a rock, and some tiny clay Buddha statues that my daughter made when she was 7 years old. It's a very personal altar -- and it always makes me feel good when I step up to it and light incense. Good luck in your home practice!
